What's up with Missouri

Yeah, I know its a puppy mill state, but all the rescues that ever get posted anywhere are there. Here in California, the westie rescue group has a waiting list of about 20 people for every dog rescued. THat means waiting 2-3 years, if you ever get one. It's pretty hard, reading about how people who want pets should take rescues or be criticized to death, when there aren't any available in a practical sense, unless you live in the Midwest!!!

There is no reason that someone from California cannot adopt a rescue from Missouri - takes a day and less than $200 to fly back and pick them up. I got my beloved Taz from WRM. He was in Chicago at the time and we just flew back, they met us at the airport, he was in a Shirpa bag already to go and he flew back to his forever home in Washington State.

A home visit would have to be arranged but that could be done by a rescue group in your area with confirmation sent to WRM. In my case, I had gotten a Cairn rescue from a local group just a few months before and went through the investigation, home site visit, etc from them and WRM took that information and okayed me.

Don't let distance dissuade you and WRM for one and I think the Cairn groups as well, are more than willing to work with a NEW Mom and Dad to get their new family member to their home. I know they do a lot of car routes too where volunteers agree to take them a certain distance, meets another volunteer who goes a certain distance and so on.

I, for one, have learned that distance is not that big of an obstacle if you want a furbaby.

As it turns out the 3 new rescues are all from Illinois and Arnie is being fostered in Illinois (by me) but it just seems like Missouri is "mill friendly" among legislators. There are WRM dogs that have gone to places like Alabama, Nebraska, Maine, Penn. S. Carolina, just to name a VERY few.

Hi, thanks for the responses. If they do adopt out of state, then I am I guess just not their type of person. I have a rescue from SmoothFoxTerrier Rescue of So. Cal. and a handicapped poodle from HART, but WRM has never responded to any of my enquiries or acknowledged receipt of an application form.

Hi MacMan - Personally, I do not know who you are so that I can respond properly. Therefore, I would need to know this. However, the most important thing to include in your application or messages is how you intend to get the dog. We've placed Westies across the US and with good references, home checks and proper correspondance, our dogs find great and happy homes. If you are interested, then please re-apply and let us know who you are and that you are with the Terrier Club.

Sue, who adopted Taz, gave no hesitation about jumping on a plane and flying out to adopt her boy. She made the arrangements and within no time and a few phone calls later - she had her boy in her arms.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,
Angie

Re: What's up with Missouri Reply to this Message

MacMan,
Roo was originally a rescue from Arkansas and on the day I adopted him, Georgia drove from Little Rock to Nashville and I flew from Albany, NY to Nashville airport and met her there.

Also, there were a lot of generous people here on the TC who volunteered to drive him portions of the way, but we felt that flying him here in one day would work out better for him, so that's what we did.

So you see, it CAN be done!

Re: What's up with Missouri Reply to this Message

I am looking for a Cairn terrier bro or sissy for MacKenzie. She loves having me to herself, but she is also very lonely without Skyler. I check out Petfinders frequently, and intend to apply to Col Potter and CairnRescue USA. I might consider a Westie, also. I have found 3 adorable pups on Petfinders-- 2 Cairns and 1 Westie--- they were in New York, Wisconsin, and Georgia--- not w/ Col Potter, CairnRescue or the Westie Orgs. When I contacted the Rescue groups who had the pups, they were OPEN to adopting out-of-state, with, of course, the same kind of safe-guards. In 3 cases, they did find good homes, 2 locally, and 1 in another states. So-o-o-o-o-o-.. keep all options open, and don't assume that the rescue groups will NOT allow an out-of-state adoption. That being said, there are some in the midwest that openly state they will not adopt out of a certain radius, usually several proximal states. I will just avoid those. But those groups who truly care about finding a wonderful Forever home will be willing to work with a prospective new mum and pup. We're seen that on the TC on several occasions.

Good luck, and I'll keep you posted when we find our new furbaby.
Oh, by the way, there is a Cairn terrier being fostered here in California by a member of a RottWeiler rescue group!!!!
