Meet Ben,New Westie Rescue

Hi...Just received these photos from foster mom Brenda.
This is Ben.
Ben came out of a shelter and was trimmed Very short because of his mats.
Brenda is taking care of all of his vet care and bringing him up to date.
Not sure of his age. Perhaps between 3-5 years old?
She reports that his is a little love.
I am sure Brenda will add more details about Ben.

Isn't he just a doll. Is so amazing to me that these little guys can remain so happy and so loving after being treated so badly. I am sure he will get adopted really fast!

What a little love, won't be long before he's in a forever home. Has he had ointment in his left eye? Just wondering about the pink colouring.

Yes, I believe so about Ben's eye.
You are Very observant!!!
As I understand, he has a "dry eye"
(Our Ralphie has had the same thing for many years)
We take him to a Vet eye specialist for this special care for our Ralphie.
He has two special ointments that we apply...(Oh, he is SO used to his little "lovie drops" put in his eye...(we just say "lovie drops" & Ralphie comes to us and waits for the very special attention...& Loves the treatments AND that special attention.
It has done wonders for Ralphie.
(Who is a going on 10 years old.(you may have noticed in some of his photos that he squints a little.....I think he is just as cute and sweet as a wide opened eye Westie!!!.
Sometimes with the dry eye, the dog will not keep that eye Wide Open when Looking at us)
(OR perhaps...It could be that CAMERA.....AGAIN, MOM!!!!)
Ben also needs some more tests done to be sure he is ready for his neuter.
He may have a couple other health issue that need to be addressed first.
Also, the latest that I know is he may be an older Westie than we had probably guessed.
We will let you know more info as we learn more.
I know Brenda and her husband are working with Ben & will add SO Much more info about this cute little guy as they learn more about his tests.
He is in a Wonderful loving foster home.....& AND IS FREE from the shelter!!!!!
This also is SO Wonderful...
It is the 4th of July ...
& Ben is celebrating
FREEDOM & HOPE for a better LIFE
tomorrow with Brenda and Tom

Re: Meet Ben,New Westie Rescue Reply to this Message

Ben has "dry eye" just like A.J. pointed out. That can be very painful and the poor fellow has never been treated. We have started the drops. He was found as a stray and sat unclaimed in a city pound until he was available for adoption. He also has a bacterial infection in his ears that were never treated so of course we are working on those, too.
My vet aged him at about 6 years.
Ben was given a complete pre-surgical screening for his neuter and the CBC indicated that he may have Addison's disease. We are waiting the results of a test. Thankfully we will have the diagnosis and can save his life. My Sabrina has Addison' Disease, she is the happiest, most fun loving Westie ever.
He won't have his neuter until we have the results of the Addison's test.

Ben is such a cutie! Our rescue, Sugar, has Dry Eye too, known as KCS. We don't know what we'd do without her, but her future home must know how important eye visits are to the doggie eye doctor and they MUST keep on top top of his meds. Very important to keep eye health. SO IMPORTANT!!!

Re: Meet Ben,New Westie Rescue Reply to this Message

Thanks for the info A.J. and Brenda, he is a cutie. When I first saw the pic of him from the side I thought he was much older, he has the slight 'old fellow ' girth that Max developed when he was about 14. I think it is very hard to determine a close age in Westies until they are quite senior. When Sara came to me two years ago, they thought she was about 7, the vet at that time thought more like 9 or 10, now, in comparison to Max (RB @ 15) I think she is at least his age.

Ben is healthy & is going to be adopted!!! Reply to this Message

Subj: Update on Ben

Ben is healthy and his adoption is pending!!!
Below is the information we just learned from Ben's Foster Mom, Brenda.
Let's all do a Happy Dance for Ben!!!!

OK. AJ. Things have been moving fast around here and need to fill you in. SORRY---I didn't get all this to you earlier.....Life....what can I say.
Anyway----Found out late Thurs that Ben DOES NOT have Addison's. I got a phone call from the vet late in the afternoon and was able to get an appt. that evening (they are open till 7:00 a couple days a week) The test from U of Mich came back OK, so the vet's did another quick blood test for K and Na and this time they were in the normal range. Just a couple of weeks of good food, and TLC made all the difference. Anyway made an appt to get the neuter done on Thurs. That evening/next day sent notes to all who inquired about adopting Ben that he was A-OK. (Wed was also spent working to get a "return" from a bad placement--whole other story)
Took Ben in for neuter Thurs AM -- they called back and wanted to know if I wanted them to remove the tumor from his eye -- WHAT tumor???? --- well, they found a small growth on the eyelid. So of course I said yes. Then called back about cleaning the teeth. I hadn't told them to do it because I was concerned about how long he would be under anesthesia, but said I'd let the vet use her best judgment on that.....good thing, he had 2 teeth pulled and the vet said on had probably been very painful. (The didn't want me to pick him up at the usual 4:30 time, wanted me to wait until 6:30 to 7:00 so they could watch him a little longer)
SO, he may be sore but is doing great. The eye is 110% better. I can't even begin to tell you how much better...... AND he is adopted. A family that was willing to take him with Addison's ....I figured if they could take him in the shape he was in when he came to us, they deserved to get him now. He will be going back down to St.L area.
So there you have the last few days in a nutshell.
Brenda

I think that's great that the family that were prepared to adopt him with an illness deserve him !! Great news.
Well done, Brenda, and thanks for the update, AJ.

Re: Meet Ben,New Westie Rescue Reply to this Message

Wonderful news all the way around. And I agree - if a family wanted to take him with Addison's, they should be the ones to get him healthy. It sounds like he will have a wonderful forever home.

Sorry about the returned pup. Hope it was not abused!
