Rescue Advice Needed

I've been on this list for over 9 months but this is my first time posting. (I'm much better at lurking than writing.) Charlie will be a year old on Sept 3rd. My husband and I have decided that he needs a Westie brother or sister. He interacts and plays well with his Pyr and Akbash brother and sister but he really needs a sibling who has his enthusiasm for play.

Last summer I filled out a rescue application at WHWTCA and, of course, never heard anything back because we have cats. I have found two Westie breeders here in Oregon but we're also open to rescuing an older Westie. (Our Pyr and Akbash are both rescues.) Do you have a suggestion as to whom I should contact? WHWTCA will just ignore me again.

Thanks for all and any advice.

Jordana

Re: Rescue Advice Needed Reply to this Message

I check petfinder several times a week. Most all I've found are restricted to no cats and/or being only dogs. And the regional rescue won't consider us because of our cats.
We'll probably end up getting another puppy because that will be all that's available to us here in Oregon. I haven't totally given up yet on a rescue adoption.

I'm down in the Corvallis area. You're up in the Portland, aren't you?
Since you have 3 girls I have a question. Are they as affectionate as the Westie males? All of our LGD females have never interacted with the family the way the males do.

Re: Rescue Advice Needed Reply to this Message

I'm sorry, I can't answer that, We have always had girls. My Girlies are very affectionate, when they want to be. I think I like their independent ways better. Fran, down in Coos Bay has both. She will see this and respond, she would be the one to know.
We are about half way between Salem and Portland.

Hi Jordana,
Yes, I have 2 males and 2 female Westies. I think they R all very lovable. R boys seem to love being held a bit longer tho than R girls.

We got 3 of our Westies from same breeder near Springfield. she does have a male puppy available now. email me and I'll put you in touch if you would like.

Westie Rescues in Oregon are very rare. unless its a private adoption.

Try Westie Rescue of Missouri ... they adopt out of state and I know that a couple of their members post to this board. They should be able to help you ...

Here is their website: http://www.westierescueofmissouri.com/

Hi! there are many differnt westie rescues, there is one in CA,www.westierescueca.com and yes westie rescue of MO, and a bunch more,
www.westierescueofmissouri.com
there is a application there you can fill out we are always looking for great homes!! and I am sure you will find the perfect match, keep in mind not all of the dogs in the rescue are up on petfinder, there are some that come in and get matched up perfectly before they ever make it to petfinder,

I sure understand your frustration with WHWTCA - was told there was a 2-3 year waiting list for rescues, and I was a MEMBER!!!!! I am not sure they really do any rescues. WRM is supposed to be better, also there is a group that split off from WHWTCA who adopts out a number of westies, based in LA, the person I know is a TC member, email me and I will send you her email address!

If you would consider a cairn instead of a westie, you could also try Col Potter. I know some of our next batch coming in soon will be fostering on the west coast.
But if you're sure you want a westie..check Westie Rescue of Missouri.. they can help you.

Yep, I agree with the others-I am astounded at the great work that Col. Potters and WRM do! There are a few other ones associated with our members, and I am equally impressed.
As for affection levels-I have had a different experience than Fran-Our Jesse is MR. Independent-he HATES being picked up and cuddled, but will climb in your lap for affection on HIS time. Don't get me wrong-he is very sweet and charming, but it's always on his terms.
Our little Bella is the most affectionate pup I have ever met. (next to Leslie's Katie)
Bella will kiss and kiss and kiss, she loves to be picked up and carried around, she always has to be near us. She is quite the Daddy's girl. Matt dotes on her ALL day!! She loves EVERY minute of it.
Jesse would rather lay out in the loft and watch out the window.
We love both though-both are so special to us beyond words!

I too have one of each ... from the same breeder different litters. Both of mine are very affectionate. Rosie particularly always wants to be held by whoever is holding Basil . Basil is far more laid back then Rosie though. I love them both ... just wish I had a bigger lap at times.

Re: Rescue Advice Needed Reply to this Message

We applied to WRM and Heartland Westie Rescue. They are both wonderful! It does pay to e-mail them personally after sending in an app.
After they get to "know" you, thru several e-mails, you are fresh in their memories AND they know that you are serious about adopting.
It does not hurt to apply to more than one rescue either, as I did. It just may happen that one rescue has one when the other doesn't.
We hope everything works out for you!

Thank you everyone for your kind words and advice. I filled out applications with WRM and CPCRN. I will send follow up emails this evening when I get off work.

Re: Rescue Advice Needed Reply to this Message

I have a male cairn...Tobie. He is very lovable but not really a lap dog....unless he feels like it. Mandie is a Female Westie that is a rescue. She can't get near you enough and loves to kiss. I love them both and they love each other. That was a concern for me. Tobie was my firt terrier and he is very very active and big...Mandie is a petite little girl but she give Tobie a run for his money. They worked out great with each other. They are inseparable and play all the time. Good luck. Don't give up and please consider a cairn rescue. Cairns are wonderful.

Re: Rescue Advice Needed Reply to this Message

I did apply to CPCRN but was denied because I have a pet door. I sent an email asking for clarification but never received a reply. Actually I think it was a semantic miscommunication. We currently have two LGD's who are rescues and two cats that I drove 340 miles to rescue. I did receive a warm welcome from Angie and WRM. At this point I think WRM is my best option. I know a rescue is in our future and not another puppy.

That's very odd. Perhaps Corinne will see this and clarify !!

Re: Rescue Advice Needed Reply to this Message

I dont think its the doggy door itself that is the problem so much as a rescue dog possibly getting out thru the doggy door and getting into trouble if they are outside unattended for a long period of time.

We all know digging cairns, and have heard stories of wild animal attacks as well as outright theft of dogs in yards. Since our CPCRN Rescue dogs may have had truly horrible lives before rescue (some, not all) we at CPCRN try to protect them from preventable problems.
