A question or two
I am very interested in adopting a brother or sister for Camy. I would prefer a rescue over a puppy but I am concerned about the timing. I know that it can take months and months to find the right match and I am going to be moving within the next year. It will be a nice move, more out into the country and we will fence the yard as soon as we move so my concern isn't about that. My concern is that with a new rescue it would be awful for the pup. In a new home and adjusting then having to move again. I know every dog and situation is different but if those who work in rescue feel that it is generally best to wait til after the move, I'll do that. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks! Beth

Re: A question or two
While I can't speak from the Rescue point of view, I got Hannah (new pup) prior to my moving house as it was easier to toilet train her in the old house than the new and I found both settled better maybe that was due to it being a new home for both of them.

Re: A question or two
Just my opinion but dogs are more flexible than humans regarding moves. Also, your current dog would have a canine companion during the move which may actually be easier for him (to have a canine bud to comiserate with - she's putting our toys in boxes, etc.)! Good luck on your decision, Darlene and Jolly, FL

Re: A question or two
We got into rescue when we adopted our first rescue molly, and we had a townhouse, then bought a new home less than a year later, and she was 4 from a puppymill, but same thing I wanted to train her at the old house, so at the new house she would be ready to go. I agree dogs are better at moving than us, it only takes them a few days, it takes me much longer!!LOL Tara

Re: A question or two
I'm not in rescue but I guess it might upset them if it happened very quickly. It's hard to decide, really, as you won't know when you can get one....the very best of luck, though. XXX.

Re: A question or two
Beth, the fur kids are much more resilient about moving than we are. As long as your new baby is bonded with you they won't care where you live. I just know Camy would love a buddy...I say "go for it" now!

Re: A question or two
Our little Frank was a rescue dog. I put on his memorial "our little traveller" because my husband was in the Air Force and Frank lived in two countries and five states. He never bothered about moving, just so long as he had his familiar things and us!

Re: A question or two
Lynda, He was a poodle/terrier mix. On the memorials I posted a photo of him sleeping in his favorite chair. I took the photo just a few days before he crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He was a sweet little gentle soul, and we do miss him terribly. But, also know he is in a better place free from his health problems.

Re: A question or two
I would not really think that it would be a big deal. My first Westie moved from an apt. to my mom's house, to Alaska, to another apartment that I found after I went up there and did not like what my husband chose, and there were no lasting effects. But of course, just like we are all different so are dogs.

Re: A question or two
My two cents is that these little ones are usually pretty adaptable. Most should do fine with a move.
Also, it usually doesn't take months and months to find the right match, unless there are unusual circumstances.

Re: A question or two
It was heartbreaking to watch my one Duncan sit and watch neighbors dogs thru the fence. Wanting them to play with her, getting excited when they ran near but heartbroke when they went on, they were multiple dog families. Getting Darby was the best decision we made.
Watching them play and romp is so satisfying and enjoyable. Both are very loving and sharing. I feel they are happier together than being alone. Terri

Re: A question or two
Beth I agree dogs are more adaptable at moving than us but it depends on how many homes you're rescue has had previously.
Whilst dogs live in the now they do like to be settled. If you are not planning to move for a while a new dog will have had time to settle with you. I'd say go for it........if you are comfortable with it.
