Getting involved in Westie Rescue
I know that some TC members are involved in Rescue and I was wondering how to go about getting involved. I went on the Westie Rescue website and there is no person in Tennessee. There is a form to fill out, but I did think I need to find out a bit more before I start. I guess that I am a little concerned about biting off more than I can chew! It is not that I don't have the time or patience, it's more a case of if I have the capacity to deal with some of the terrible situations pups are in. Anyway, I would really appreciate any help/advice you might have on this. Thanks xx

Re: Getting involved in Westie Rescue
Barrett is a member here and his mum has dealings with Westie Rescue in that area, I think, Claire, but I've not seen him post in a while. Look up Greta in the member list and you can email him. XXX.

Re: Getting involved in Westie Rescue
Well as the Volunteer Coordinator for Col. Potter (Cairn Rescue) - I always make sure our volunteers do NOT over-extend themselves. If I have a new volunteer who wants to help in 6 different ways, I suggest maybe they try doing one thing - helping with reference calls, or signing up for fostering - and then see how their time is - whether they want or can take on more. There is a lot of "burn-out" in rescue - it can be very tiring, dis-heartening "work" but overall, for me at least, the thought of helping save lives & find needy Cairns the perfect forever home, out-weighs any bad patches. I'm a foster home, work in foster home admin, work with our Updates Team (getting the write-ups on the web) and do tons with fundraising. Every time I hear about one of our Cairns that makes a new life, I feel like I contributed to that dog's future as well. Can't beat a feeling like that.
just my 2 cents.

Re: Getting involved in Westie Rescue
Both Lindsey (& the Lollipops) and myself do some work here in the UK for Westie Rescue.
It is very rewarding to know you helped save a life or gave a Westie a new lease of life but it can be heart breaking at times.
Whilst there are genuine reasons for some dogs to be rehomed some people are very fickle about parting with what we consider adorable pets when they decide they've become a burden!!!!
On the flip side it's great to see a new owner and a Westie building a new life together.
All I do is Home Checks and Transport, its all I have time for but I feel I've done my bit to help.
Jewels and Rescued Sam!

Re: Getting involved in Westie Rescue
Thanks for all the advice. Belinda and Angie are just starting up Westie Rescue here in Tennessee, so I am going to join up with them and see if I can't do my bit. As I said in an email to Belinda, I'm not sure about a lot of things and I think the only way I am going to find out is to just try it.

Re: Getting involved in Westie Rescue
We are so excited Claire is going to be our West TN coordinator. I am in Middle TN. Now we need someone in East TN. Anyone interested? If so please email. This way the whole state is covered and it isn't overwhelming for anyone.
