This is a very sad story, it broke my heart but I do question why this owner had two puppies without a fenced yard, and why he left them unattended and tied out in this heat.

Dog hanged to death from tree
Chili, NY (US)
Date: Jul 17, 2006
Local Map: available
Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Police are looking for the person who hanged a puppy from a tree and left it to die on July 17.

The dog, named Miss Ellie, was a 14-week-old West Highland terrier.

Miss Ellie's owner, Tim Farrell, was away from the home for a little while. He said he knew something was wrong when he spotted his other puppy, a golden retriever, wandering down the road. "Dip" was supposed to be tied up in the backyard with Miss Ellie.

When Farrell pulled in the driveway, his eye caught sight of something in a tree in the back yard.

"I'm like, what's that awful bird in the tree?" he said.

But with a closer look, he realized it was Miss Ellie, hanging from her leash on a branch.

"I just hopped out of the truck, cut her out of the tree and tried to revive her thinking it might've just happened,” he said.

The Humane Society believes it was done out of retaliation. Farrell said he's had minor trouble recently with one person, but isn't sure who is responsible.

Miss Ellie was a barker, what Farrell calls "real talkative." Farrell said the puppy would even "talk" to his wife on the phone.

"I'd put her on speaker phone, she'd perk right up and bark," he said.

It's believed the dog died of asphyxiation, but the Humane Society will perform an autopsy to be sure.

There is a $2,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. If caught and convicted, the person responsible could spend up to two years in prison. The West Highland Terrier was found July 17 at 3:30 p.m. in the backyard of 2742 Chili Avenue.

The Humane Society is investigating the case. People with information are asked to call the Animal Cruelty Hotline at 223-6500. All calls are confidential.

he's lucky something didn't happen to the other one as well.

It should just be illegal to leave dogs tied up and unattended. That poor baby. I am not sure who makes me angrier: the person who will go straight to hell for doing this, or the idiot owner for leaving a 3 month old puppy tied up outside.

I won't even leave my boys outside alone in a fenced yard. I am constantly checking them. I guess I just don't trust anyone.

We are the same way. We are even installing secondary entry gates on our yard to ensure those LWDS don't slip out when we have to use the gates.

I am just sick, realy sick. That poor little puppy. My opinion, the person who did this should experience the same, hanging from the highest tree!!!

That's awful, but like you say-what was he thinking ? And especially if she'd already been reported as a nuisance by neighbours......poor girl. There was a case here last year that was similar involving a Dalmatian. It was horrible.

I have never understood people who put their dogs outside in the yard and then leave! Sometimes for the whole day! They are just asking for something awful to happen either by accident or otherwise.

I can't even imagine what I would do... I believe there is a law about - innocent by reason of insanity - that is what they would charge me with... insanity...

and the sad thing is - the dogs were tied up in the backyard... on a leash? Its horrible all the way around what happened here - but shows the safety a fenced in yard can hold.
