Ross/Riley the WRM fella
This is some information on the little guy that Kris posted about last night. I have some photos but will send those later tonight. Trust me when I tell you that unless you REALLY must see them, don't look. First of all, your heart will break, and then you will want to choke someone!
Ross/Riley is not out of the woods. They are not sure he can be saved--he is in danger of going into septic shock. Sometimes, in rescue, this is what you need to deal with--giving him your best, making him comfortable and hoping that his little spirit is strong enough for the battle to heal! He is safe and will be cared for NOW!
Here is one of the posts. I will post another of the letters.
Well,
Brian (Dr. Manwiller) cried. Usually I am the one crying. He walked in, abruptly sat on a chair and said"Oh Dawn, this is not good. " I told him I knew. He is not so hopeful that Ross can be helped. I asked him if he felt professionally, if Ross should be euthanised and he said lets give it a go for several days and see what transpires, but based on his condition and age, he said to prepare myself. He said this is definelty neglect, given the fact that he has not seen a vet for 17 months and that the course of treatment was not adhered too. He also did document that we discussed not getting UTD on immunizations due to his condition, it would be too much and he knows everybutty is UTD on everything. He also said no dog should have to get to this stage.
He walked us out and actually announced to the waiting room that I was with rescue and this was not my dog and I would never treat my dog like this.
Ross was an absolute sweetheart while he was looked over, scraped and swabbed. So:
Ross does not have mites/mange
He will not grow fur back due to the amount of tissue damage.
The biggest concern at this time is his open wounds. They are bleeding, oozing from the damage. They will be very difficult to get closed, as they are infected and deep.
Some yeast was found on the smear, not horrible, but is a concern, not malassezia over growth.
His ear, is almost double in size from the other. It is infected also.
So we actually agreed on the course of treatment for him:
Prednisone-steroid, decrease inflammation, decrease itch 2x/day
Ketoconazole-systemic antifungal 2/day. His skin is just a breeding ground for organisims
Shampoo/leave in conditioner-topical antifungal 3x's per week
Otomax-ear 2x per day
Antibiotic 2x day for bacterial infection of paws and skin
Food- he said...just feed him alot. Needs high protein.
Food allergies I am sure exist, but this has alot to do with stress.
Sweet boy :{ Makes RoseButt look like a cake walk....she is doing really well. Her fur is coming in nicely, she will be pretty and we are doing much better on the food. She is a litlle shy, but that ole' westie is coming out........

A letter from today
He needs all the help he can get. Maybe folks could send noted to Dawn to read to the little guy--to let him know that he has our support. It sounds to me like Dawn is the perfect person to be caring for him. I would not even know what they are talking about; let alone what to do!
Here is her email: dawnbil@yahoo.com
Dawn wrote today:
Systemic sepsis would be more acute symptoms, fever, vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea.......his area I have been steam cleaning, rather than chemically cleaned as to not irritate anything, and we will kill any microbes before they get on him. Vet did not even want to take blood because we can guess he has an elevated white blood cell count, low albumin, low electrolytes...... His bed area gets clean blankies every day, we wash our hands before we pet him. The bummer is the rain and he is a Westie, wants to check out that mud, sniff for rodents....so I am watching him carefully.
The best thing is, he is peeing and pooing well, eating like he is famished, without frowing up, so I am feeding him four times per day, he is so skinny. He slept like a baby and THE BEST Thing I have only ONCE seen him biting at himself! I bathed him yesterday in the medicated stuff and leave on lotion. He did not mind and we played with a ball in the water. Had to fake him out because it needed to stay on for 15 minutes. Cool water to prevent vasodilation, which could cause itchiness. He was a good boy and he was dirty dirty, yuk. He has lambskin/moleskin to lay on, doesn't stick to the wounds. Helps when you work in healthcare:) I will keep you posted. Andrew says we should name him YODA! Stinker. But I have to say there is a striking resemblance. :))) I think he is doing OK. Dawn

Here are the pictures
These are very disturbing photos. That people would let their dog get to this point when it was avoidable!
I post them not to upset anyone--and if this is going to be too upsetting to you, please do NOT open the link, but this is part of what some brave rescue angels do. They nurse these sick, little guys back to health.
Let's pull together for the little guy--send some prayers, some bright lights--whatever you believe in---please send them to help this little guy heal! That, as much as medicine is what is going to make the difference for him.
I pray that in a couple of months that we can see some new photos of him--happy as a little Westie can be, a little fat on his bones, short nails, and most of all a SMILE on his face. We all know what that terrier smile looks like!
Thanks!

Re: Here are the pictures
Pam, bless his heart. He looks like Bo and Rufus that Tommy and I helped rescue from Louisiana. Laura and I met his owners in the parking lot of a McDonalds. They were so stupid but they cried and cried when we took them. To show how stupid they were, I asked them not to feed them that morning so they wouldn't get car sick. They said they tended to get sick. Anyway when we got there, the idiots said, well so they wouldn't get sick, we didn't feed them yesterday either. So I gave them all the hot dogs I had brought and they inhaled them. I can still see that woman sobbing as we drove away. I have high hopes that he will pull through. Oh, Bo and Ru didn't get all their hair back but amazingly they got most of it back like Wendy did. I think the bag balm is wonderful for that....

Re: Ross/Riley the WRM fella
That poor little angel. There has to be a special hell for people who allow animals to suffer like that. I didn't want to look at his photo, but I did. I will say special prayers for this little fighter.

Re: Ross/Riley the WRM fella
It is horrible. Maybe some hair will grow back. When my second Westie developed Melazzazia (sp), she looked like if her hair would not grow back and she also had ozzing skin lesions. Before anyone thinks that I did not take her to the vet (4 different ones, including a vet dermatologist who told me she had allergies), I did, but no one could diagnose what she had. After using special shampoos (when her oozing stopped and her skin got thickened, I use a tar shampoo that helped her out and some of her hair grew back.

Grrrrr......that's just so wrong. I hope they can truly save him. I am so very sorry some dogs are treated like this. They will be dealt with whether now or later in life.

Re: Ross/Riley the WRM fella
Has this dog's owner been charged with neglect or cruelty??? Sounds like the vet already verified that - poor little guy. Hope he makes it through.

Bless his little heart. I bet the baths and lotion feel good to his sore skin. It looks like it would hurt him to move.

Re: Ross/Riley the WRM fella
Bo and Rufus- that was the first thing to come to mind and the vet wasn't sure if they would make it, and the hook worms and heartworm- remember the homeopathic remedy and it worked!! the full moon part is the most I can remember- this guy is in our prayers and with the best foster mom!! WOW he should be charged with cruelty maybe it would prevent them EVER owning a pet agian- he is in our prayers, and we know he will make it through
