POOP!

Help!!! Our 1.5 year old Cairn, Binky, has started eating poop! YUCK Never before, only recently. We added a new pup, 5 month Bella, a while back, no other behavior problems. Yes, I clean up after them. When I turn them out into our fenced yard however I hate to watch their every move but I am at this point!!! I've read all the tricks, leave it, Adolf's meat tenderizer, etc. Does anyone have any similiar horror stories and if so what did you do?

Re: POOP! Reply to this Message

A good heavy sprinkling of red pepper did the trick for us. After you see them go just put it on, after they get a bite of that, they won't eat it anymore. Well unless they like things spicy!!

Re: POOP! Reply to this Message

My vet told me to sprinkle meat tenderizer on their food. It changes the poop somehow to where it takes bad (as if it didn't already) and they don't want to eat it. You only have to do it for a bit. As soon as they are out of the habit so to speak you can quit. It worked with Lucy and we have no problems in that area at all anymore.

Both mine did it as pups the grew out of it. However, Rio has reverted. But I cannot find meat tenderiser anywhere !!! When I do I'll give it a go.

Ooooh, my favourite subject, I am (would like to be) a poop eater extraordinaire. I have to be quick cos my Mum hovers and most times she beats me to it, but sometimes she slips up, hehe. She has put all sorts of things on it, my favourite was paprika. She reckons that pineapple cubes in our food worked but really I just decided to lull her into thinking I had given up. Rosie Rocket.

Re: POOP! Reply to this Message

I have been told that Adolphs Meat Tenderizer is the best for this problem. I found it at Food Lion grocery store. I got the kind with NO msg. After using it for four days I haven't had a problem but it could be just because I am watching them like hawks! Put Poop eating dogs into Yahoo search and there is all kinds of information about this DISGUSTING but natural habit...

Smidgen and Skeeter still do it and probably always will. Nothing has worked with them. I haven't tried the meat tenderizer though. Supposedly, pineapple is supposed to cause a chemical reaction that makes it taste bad too. We just try to clean up the yard best we can. Sometimes, we just have to follow Smidgen around the yard LOL!! They must not mind Skylar too much because it is open season on her poop too!!!

Well, Stuart was famous for eating poop, and really, what worked the best WAS staying on top of them...I did use red pepper and pinapple, and the red pepper DID work, but if I didn't pepper some in time it was GONE. What worked best for me was a firm NO anytime I would see him going for ANYTHING on the ground. Lately, no problems, but sometimes it resurfaces! It is so gross!

Hi! My last dog, German Shepherd, did the same still he had 4 years old, tho he was perfectly trained in every sense!!. You can try to put some pepper on the puppy's poop before Binky sees it. Put pepper as many times as you can, and Binky will learn not to eat poop.
Also try changing Binky's food, when dogs eat poops, sometimes means that they don't get enough minerals in their diet.

Re: POOP! Reply to this Message

...and as my vet reminded me, if you have more than one dog, you need to do the same for both. Pepper on one's poop, pepper on the other. Meat tenderizer in one's food; meat tenderizer in the other.

He said that's because if you only treat one poop to taste bad, they will just move on to the next one. So even if one is a poop eater and the other is not, you have to treat the problem as if they both are.
