Crate Training Help!

I am the mommy of a wonderful WestiePoo Buddy - You may remember him from the Rescue board last July...We are a member of Terrier Town, but I come here and read the message board daily, I just love hearing of all your adventures and seeing all the pictures. But now I have a question and I know that someone here will be able to help me out...Buddy has had some seperation anxiety issues since we got him. He does not like to be in his crate. I have been working with him for the last 3 months, we did Clomicalm once a day for 30 days and that really seemed to help, also I have gotten him a Kong. He seems to be better about not trying to escape the crate. I have tried all the tips and tricks, putting him in there when we are home and sitting outside of the kennel talking to him, lengthening the time he is in there, and so on. But still every morning he hides from me, either under the bed or under the living room chair. What can I do to get him to "Kennel Up"... I am at a loss. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

I have to say I hate crates and it sounds like he is really not happy with it. Can't you keep a room free for him to be loose in while you're away ?

We have a folding fence we got at Home Depot, Lowells, Etc. Can't remember for sure. It folds up when not in use. Is 4 FT. high & has a door in it. Works great! Willis is a rescue also & 7 mo. Not trustworthy yet. This fence is also in the Care-a-Lot & Dr. Fosters & Smith catalogs, I think. I set it up in kitchen. Had to use this, since Willis "jumped" the baby gate on the bathroom we had him in to start with. GOOD LUCK!

I am a fan of crate training, but apparently this little guy has been traumatized by them, so I agree, another way must be found. The fence sounds like a good option.
My Girlies love their crates, they are a source of comfort and safety for them, and they know it, but if for a minute I thought it was any other way, those crates would be gone.

I really think it is more his seperation anxiety than his not liking the crate. He will go in there when we are home, sometimes just to hang out for a bit. We talk about what a nice place it is, and I and my daughter even pretend to climb in...I know we are silly. It is just when we are getting ready to leave, (showering, dressing, etc.) that he hides. I think it is more me leaving than the crate. If I put him in a bedroom with the door shut for a few minutes, say to bring in the groceries from the car, he will whine, and scratch furiously trying to get out. I have a feeling if I put him in a bedroom while we are gone he would destroy things, or soil everywhere. Maybe I am totally wrong...When we get home in the afternoon, he is generally sleeping, so he does not cry the entire time. Also one last thing, with the fence, he is very good at jumping over things, baby gates - no problem! keep in mind he is part poodle, so he has a little bit longer legs and a tremendous leap!! Thank you everyone for your input here.

Hi Keri. I know this post is old, but I thought of something that might help seperation anx. We started giving Bauer treats only when we leave the house, not ever when we come home. We praise him when we are leaving and don't over-coddle him when we get home (which is so hard).

He has improved remarkably and is now happy go-lucky w/ his treat and Kong when we leave.

Hope you are both doing better by now,...but just in case...give it a try.

I have always left the Minkies with the run of the house since I got them. Luckily they're not chewers. I always leave a radio on and plenty of toys too, softies mostly they prefer.

Keri, Our Willis has gotten over the baby gate also, but not the house fence. It stands 4ft. high & it is small enough around that they can not get a run at it, to jump over...as far as we can tell. So far, Willis has not met us at the door, as he did with the baby gate. Hope it all works out for you!
