White dog shaker syndrome

Our West Highland Terrier, Boudreau, was recently diagnosed with White Dog Shaker Syndrome. He has been treated with a course of Prednisone and is now being weaned off. Unfortunately, the shakes are starting to return. Has anyone else had any experience with this? Any and all replies are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Kris,

You might want to contact Lea, whose Westie Bonnie has this syndrome. I know that Lea is very interested in talking with other owners of dogs with WDSS. You can contact Lea through her email address on Bonnie's member page. Just look up Bonnie from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

I hope this helps,
Teresa, Dexter and Fancy

Hi Kris, yes it is my Bonnie who has WDSS (diagnosed in January 2003). Please feel free to e-mail me - the exact same thing happened to Bonnie. We weaned her off the prednisone and she was OK for a couple of months but the shakes returned. She is now on prednisone every other day, low dose, and she is great. Nothing she can't do.

Thanks Lea for the reply. It's encouraging to know that Bonnie is doing well now and that she is active and happy. Poor Boudreau just hasn't been the same since it started and it's really breaking our hearts. I will send an email to further discuss symptoms and treatment.

Dear John, Irene and Toby-
Thanks so much for the best wishes and kind thoughts. It sounds like it's going to be a long process and your encouragement means more than you know.

We kind of stumbled onto the Terrier Club site and everyone here has been so nice - we're happy we did!

Valium has worked wonders for our rescues. :)

Re: White dog shaker syndrome Reply to this Message

Hi Angie - Thanks for the post. Are you using valium in conjunction with pred? Or solo? We're weaning the Boudreau down from the loading doses of pred and he still seems to have occasional bouts of shaking - they are not as long in duration or as severe as earlier but they still are occurring. Just curious. Do you see a lot of this? I'm not finding too many people who know about it.
