Heart worm
My Cairn Terrier has just tested positive for heart worm. I'm concerned about the harsh method of treatment. Has anyone else gone through the treatment process with a Cairn Terrier?

Re: Heart worm
The treatment may be harsh, but without it, your Cairn would die.
Good luck,

Re: Heart worm
You really don't have a choice if you want to save your dog. Unless they are heavily infested most will survive the treatment. We wish you luck. xxxxBetty and the Girlies...

Re: Heart worm
I do not have a Cairn that has had heart worm. But I do have a Black Lab mix that has. The first part of the treatment was pretty bad---I did not have her then but she needed to be quiet for while. When she had her 2nd round, they wanted to keep her at the vet's office while they gave the treatment on that outside chance that she would have a bad reaction to a quick kill of some of the microfilia (not sure of the spelling). But she did not. If she would have, there would have been an immediate need for emergency care and by the time we would have gotten her to the vets' office, it would have been too late.
I know some here have helped either a Westie or a Cairn through all portions of heartworm treatment though and am sure they will have better information that I do.
Good luck.
Thanks, Pam and pups

Re: Heart worm
It's not nearly as harsh/nasty as it used to be in the old days. Yes, there can be complications, but usually, as someone said, only if the dog is strongly positive and there's already been damage to the heart/lungs. Mostly, it's critical to keep the dog quiet after treatment. The treatment can cause pieces of the worms to break off and the dog needs to be kept quiet while these are working their way through the dog's system. And unless there has already been too much damage done, it is critical that the dog be treated and kept on preventive henceforth.

Re: Heart worm
Heartworms are caused by infected mosquitoes. The worms themselves look like spaghetti and take over the whole heart and eventually will kill. Somebody else may have a better explanation. One of the signs of infestation is a really weird sounding, very bad cough.
