Testing for UTIs Vote for this post

Brodie, my 6 year old, has shown signs of a possible urinary tract infection. My question is: what is the consensus on the best way to check for this? My vet prefers to do the "clean catch" method, involving the needle directly into the bladder. I'm just not comfortable doing this to her unless absolutely necessary, and I'm leaning towards bringing in a sample. Thoughts, please?

I would take a sample for him to check before I allowed the more invasive procedure. If's it's just a simple UTI that's all he should need.

I agree. When humans have UTI's they don't put a needle in the bladder. Can dogs have cranberry juice?

There's a cranberry pill you can give dogs.
I give Stormie one each day, her vet told me about doing this.
You can get them in most stores where you find Vitamins.

I would just bring in a urine sample. A needle into the bladder seems very invasive to just obtain a urine sample to rule out a urinary tract infection. Pat - Zip, Joey & Sean's Mom

I'd go for a sample. That test sounds nasty ! When my Rio had a bladder infection she was drinking and drinking and trying to pee all the time. Hope she's better soon.

Bring a sample!! The other way is very painful! I once had a vet who without warning or saying anything to me put a needle into my cat's bladder to extract urine. My poor cat screamed and was upset with me the whole way home. I never went to that vet again! Lori

Thanks everyone. I did bring a sample today. I guess I was curious if my vet is doing something out of the ordinary by asking for the clean catch method. I have read on this board many times about folks bringing in urine samples.

A needle into the bladder is a sterile proceedure and "clean catch" is washing the area first. Use two containers. Get a little urine in first container and continue to collect urine in second container. Throw away first container with urine and save second container with urine specimen for vet. I would use large jar lids or alluminum pie pans to collect the urine, then pour into clean container for vet.
