Kirby's Castration Vote for this post

Hi All,

We had Kirby Castrated on the 31st of March 2006 he had one undesended one so had two wouunds but and he healed up very quickly and in fact I was shocked how quickly he recovered.

He had to stay on his lead out on our woodland walks which he hated and I felt very mean really as Kaylie and Angel were off doing great dog stuff right under his little nose!

He had a check up on 3rd April and his wounds were well healed and looked very tidy which was great as I have a kinda of phobia about stitches!

On 10th April his stitches were removed and things looked very nicely healed and he was allowed off lead at last as keeping him calm was a nightmare...LOL

Any way 3 weeks after the Op we noticed a lump and he had an Infection under one of the scars! It burst and he had to go on Antibiotics then the second scar had a pea sized lump come up which also burst so more Antibiotics!

My Vet thinks Kirby had a bad reaction to the internal stitches which he says is really rare has anypne else had this problem?

BTW Kirby was Castrated quite young as he was a Rescue Pup and we had to sign paper work on his Adoption Day to say we would have it done it's a condition of ownership which I think is a good thing.

Hi Kirby,
I am a horse vet, but did work in small animal practise some years ago. I saw a fair number of suture abscesses from reactions - I used to only use stainless steel for this reason. So, bottom line, its unpleasant, but not unusual or a big deal.

HI THANKS,

For your reply it was just a shock after he healed so well and after the stitches had been removed to see Infection.

Strange thing that you have seen it many times and yet our Vet says they do not see many cases of Dogs having a reaction to the internal sutures.

Just a good job it never happend to Angel when she had her Pacemaker fitted!!!

Working with Horses must be a great job owing a Horse is a child hood dream of mine but sadly never earn enough to own one:(

When I win the Lotto:)

Little chuckle, you will need the lotto, after you buy the horse, the purchase is the cheapest part of owning one! (I have 3, so I drive an old pickup and eat a lot of beans and rice!)

My vet warned me that Mulli might have a stitch make a lump under his incision and not to worry about it. It didn't but at least I knew not to be concerned. Glad Kirby is doing well otherwise...

It's good he should be neutered but perhaps they insisted on it too young ?
I'm sure someone here once posted about their dog having a reaction similar to Kirby's but I can't remember who now. I hope he'll heal up well.

I just looked....I see he was done at 9 months. I don't think that's too young. Before 6 I'd think it is but I know many do it even younger !!

Hi Lyn,

She is the only Samoyed in the Uk with one.

It was an awful time but we had no option do it or she would have died very quickly.

Can I read about Lulu anywhere I have just not found that many people on line that have had a Pacmaker fitted in their Dog apart from a Family in the US which we stayed in contact with.

I will leave you the link to Angels page about it just incase you would like to read it.

That was interesting. Lulu had Bonnie done at Bristol's vet school, I think. Here's an article I found on Google about it.
