brown streak on back Vote for this post

Hello all,

I have a question. Mac is only 4 months old and he has a tan streak from his head down the middle of his back to the start of his tail. I have read that this is sometimes common in westie pups, but I am not too sure. I am not bothered by it, it stands him out from the crowd, but does or has any one have this with their pup?
Thanks!!!

Jacky

Cool, I will bet he will be a real ZOOMER, he already has a racing stripe.

I have seen some westies with a light tan/brown fur streak down the backs.

I think it's because of their Cairn heritage.

I am amazed at how much my wheaten Cairn looks like your dog in the Terrier Club post about the dark dorsal streaks. Hers started at about 5 years of age. She's now 14 and the dorsal stripe is getting darker, wider and more defined. I keep her clipped because of our hot, humid weather here in Florida. My groomer has never seen this before. I worried about it until I finally did some research and found it was harmless and kind of common. I wish I could post a pic, but I can't figure out how to do it from my iPad.

Some people call it a dorsal fin. I understand it is quite common in Westies. Heidi doesn't have one at all, but Glen has a much coarser coat and he has a very obvious stripe down the middle of his back. His skin is a lot darker too and I think that is partly what makes his stripe more pronounced.

I think it's very normal. Most of the Westie's I've seen have at least a little tan down their back. Camy's is very light, you can barely see it unless you are really looking. Lexi's is more pronounced but I think it's cute.

Yes very normal. It is called a dorsal stripe. Our Daisy's is quite obvious, Sissy's very light and BeeGee doesn't have one. Most do have them to one degree or another.though.

Nessie has one but her dad didn't. Nessie has light skin and her dad's was dark. Nessie's hair is coarse and thick. A bit wavy as she likes the wild look!

Our Mindy and Maggy had prominent dorsal stripes; especially after grooming. Molly does have a very, very light one.

Yes, both Minkies have it. It's a good thing as it's lanolin in his coat.....they call it a dorsal stripe though I call the Minkies' ones their "skunk lines" !!

Kelsey has one, I wondered about it to when she was a pup, but some westies have it.

Tessa's is pretty noticeable but Duncan's is very light. You have to look hard to see his.

Re: brown streak on back Vote for this post Reply to this Message

I love all these replies. I was told that this is more prominent in some Westies (as Angel's too) because they don't burn as quickly in the hot summer months. Angel's stripe is darker after grooming too, and her ears and stomach get darker too. I don't know if it is true or not. I know someone who has two pugs and the light one cannot stay out too long in the summer.
Love,
Angel and Jeanne
