licking paws Vote for this post

Mac has been licking his paws alot lately. He is not biting, just licking. He will lay down with his paws kind of curled around to lick his pads. I have touched them and there does not seem to be anything in them.
Has anyone had this problem? It has been going on for a little while. COuld it be an anxious responce? I cant remember how long he has been doing it. I dont know if it has been since we found out about our baby. We think he knew before we did... could it be that?
Please let me know if anyone has had this paw licking thingy.
Thanks!

I would agree that it is probably allergies. Fall is the only time Heidi has allergy problems and it always starts with paw licking. I don't know if this is the case for everyone, but you might want to keep an eye on Mack's ears. In our case licky paws seems to always be accompanied by allergy ears and she doesn't always scratch at her ears.

I agree, allergies. Duncan has licked her paws every spring and fall! I try to wipe her paws off some to cut down on the irritatant.
The fur looks brownish so I connect it with running thru leaves in the yard.

Yep, my Mac also licks his paws - my allergies are really bothering me so I am guessing that it what it is with him too. Hmmm, Claire - he has also been messing with his ears - didn't make the connection, but it makes sense that it goes together. I just started back on his ear drops. But his skin is great - no bumps from the allergies.
Good luck with your Mac!

Angel licks her pads, when the fur between the pads gets too long.

I have a small hand-held clipper that I use to trim that fur.

But I would definite take him to the vet's first.

Good Luck

Love,
Jeanne and Angel

Our Vet said sometimes dogs just do it for the sake of doing it. But in my girls case it's due to allergies and some of the ideas they came up with to distract them from doing it really didn't work - bitter apple spray, washing their feet each time they came back inside (that was time consuming and endless)and wiping them with a special cloth.

Rio does this a lot but with her it's just a habit...like nail-biting.

Levi licks his fur on the front legs but just for a little while and than he stops. He has no allergies I was told by his breeder so I hope that it is not that.
