I ve got a black Belly!!!
Can Anybody give me some Help, Advice, or Reason, why my belly turns a different colour?
My DAD gave me a Bath last night, and after when I was laying down being dried, he noticed that my belly was gradually turning from a nice pink, to mottley black, This is not the first time it has happened! Most times its Pink, then every once in a while it goes dark, anybody know why? I know its got something to do with pigmentation, but WHY

Don't know why but the Minkies have always had black bellies. They have lots of big black patches under their fur you see when they're wet too on the pink skin on their backs.

Don't know why but Finn has a lot of black, Elliot is pink like the Easter bunny,haha!

Wow Maise, Maybe you have Cameleon blood..We are always nice and pink. Daisy is a bit darker so we can see spots when she's wet too, She has a nice white bib under her chin. We hope you can find an answer to this puzzlement.

Do You think there might be Chameleon in the breed? I know that Misty has got a long tongue, Is that anything as well?

Not really sure why Maisie but my Mum thinks it might be the sun. I have a pink belly and ears and in the summer they turn dark grey. mine is just turning now with our recent "heatwave". If you find out a real reason let me know?

Stuart also is blackish. He definitely is more black in the summertime, and when his allergies are bad. I have heard two stories. The breed standards say that Westies have black skin, and it is preffered, but I have also heard, and from presonal experience believe, that black skin is related to allergies. It would be interesting to take a poll on this.....I think I will do that on the other board....

When you finally get the results analysed it would be interesting to know the results, It would appear from posts that skin colour though does not seem to play a major role in allergy disposition.
I personally think its due to outside influences of diet, airborne dusts and pollens, and other chemicals possibly, with various forms of mites and insects like fleas, ticks, etc.
Maisie DAD, Still dont understand why her skin colour changes though!
