Schpanky is such a Wonderful Westie boy!!!
He has been completely vetted, & groomed, had his neuter, his toofers cleaned, and a little growth on his eyelid removed.
Our Vet did 3 different blood tests, and unfortunately, Schpanky is heart worm positive. But not a severe case of HW, thank goodness.
This is so sad ....& could have so easily been prevented from happening to him...
Schpanky began his heartworm treatment yesterday at our vet's clinic.
The entire staff is being so loving and caring to him.
We stop by daily to visit him & take him toys & treats.
He whimpered when we had to leave yesterday.
Scpanky will be fostered in Omaha until he is ready for adoption. He needs to be kept quiet for a while.

Here is the link to all of his photos in Westie Rescue of Missouri.
The latest photos are at the very end of this Ofoto album.

Re: Is there any news on Schpanky? Reply to this Message

We adopted a heartworm positive lovely Lab mix this summer. She came to us as a foster and --well, we failed Fostering 101 again. We had to keep her relatively quiet since she had a light case of heartworm too and then we had to get her through her 2nd treatment. We left her at the vet that day--minimal cost really--since they would know what to do on the outside chance she would have a reaction. She did not. But it is really quite manageable--going through the treatment. She goes for another check this month and then she will be given a clear bill of health.

It is so very preventable---but glad it was caught early! What a cute guy---wish we had room--love those little guys! Apparently, like the rest of you, I would live with a zoo if I could--LOL.

But my message is to not let his being heartworm positive turn you off. At this stage it is a relatively easy workthrough. Our Sophie did not suffer any ill effects--she certainly did not whine like I would if it were me--just a sort at the site of the first injection--which was treated by antibiotics.

I am so glad to hear about your great results with the HW treament, Pam.
Our vet feels that with the mild case that Schanky has...he should recover quickly.
He checked all of his functions..(liver, kidney etc. etc....) and everything else checks out great.
We will say very special prayers for him to be chasing squirrels and learning the Zoomies very soon.

Re: Is there any news on Schpanky? Reply to this Message

Just returned home from visiting Schpanky again this afternoon at our vets.
He is moving very slow & really wanted to be held and petted. He is such a sweetheart, so gentle & affectionate.
He is 7 years old and has LOTS of wonderful happy years ahead in his life.
He was an owner surrender.
She got him when he was about a year old.
He came from Miami, Florida when his owner moved to Iowa, and gave him away to a relative.
They had him tied up to a shed with some hounds with little food or water available. His former owner took him home and gave him alot of attention.
His owner was very ill, & the shelter in Iowa gave her my name to let her know that we could help via Westie Rescue of Missouri.
She contacted me & we went to pick him up on Sunday.
He was not neutered & had not been to a vet for a long time.
Thank goodness his owner didn't put an ad in the paper or he could have ended up with a Back Yard Breeder, or a puppymills hands....& not had a chance for LIFE!!!
He has always had to be on a stake out lead....so I really want him to finally have a fenced yard so he can learn to do some Zoomies & chase a few squirrels!!!!

Here is a photo of Schpanky taken today at the clinic. Schpanky really loves to be snuggled and cuddled, and he needs lots of comfort. Took this photo this afternoon of our precious rescue.

Gail,Schpanky will first need to finish his HW treatment, & then will be in a foster home in Omaha, where he can be relatively quiet for several weeks.
He has not been posted on the WRM site on petfinder until he gets through with his health care.

I talked to Jason about Schpanky, and even showed him the before and after pictures. He agreed he is very sweet but said no to applying for adoption.

We are still trying to get our company off the ground, and he doesn't want the added financial responsibility another pet would bring. *sigh*

Re: Is there any news on Schpanky? Reply to this Message

Schpanky is an owner surrender...
Have been talking to her former owner since August...
She could no longer care for him....she had health problems...and contact a shelter in her home city...
We have worked with this shelter before to help Westies, Scotties and Carins in need.....so they knew we would do the very BEST to help his owner find a loving home for sweet Schpanky....
I got the emergency call Sunday, Nov. 7th....asking IF I could help right away....
This is how it happened...
Thank goodness his owner did not do that ad in the newspaper...or turn him into a shelter....
Our shelters have gotten to know us well...and now they call or refer Rescue...
This is wonderful....
They are understanding what we Really do in Rescue....

Boy, I would love to get him. Our back yard is fenced in with a wrought-iron fence, and rabbits run through it all the time. My two would love to show him how to chase rabbits!

Do you think he would do well with 2 other Westies??? Princess is 9 and MacDuff is 6.

Re: Is there any news on Schpanky? Reply to this Message

Schpanky has been an only dog in his quiet previous household.
He will be fostered in Omaha by the family who adopted Sparkle, now called Miss Lily Whyte, so this will be a good test to see how he does with other dogs.
Lily is a WRM adoptee. She was a mill dog who is 4 years old. Her family drove to Gower, Missouri to Lu Ann's to adopt her. She is very quiet and sweet and shy, so this will be a great foster home where Schpanky can recover from his treaments.
