Double coat vs wiry coat Vote for this post

Hi friends!
Sadly we lost Statler on October 12th, so our hearts and home are very empty these days.  It happened so quickly, and we made the difficult decision to say goodbye.

I will be speaking tonight with a breeder who has a Westie litter due around December 10th. My question has to do with the double coat vs the wiry coat.  Both Waldorf and Statler had the double coat, and we loved how soft and thick their coats were.  If the parents each have the double coat, does this pretty much guarantee that the puppies will also have the double coat?  Or is the coat a random outcome regardless of the parents?

Any advice you have about questions for me to ask the breeder tonight are greatly appreciated.  I will also be talking to a Cairn breeder tonight who has puppies available now.  Both have been breeding pups for over 30 years according to the AKC website.

Does anyone know of the best ways to check out a breeder's validity, success, etc.?  I'm guessing I can ask for references from each?

Thanx in advance for any help you can provide me!

Jill

I have had 4 Westie girls not one has had a double coat and only Matilda has a slight wiry feel to her hair but only down her back. A groomer once told me it is because they are clipped not stripped but I am not sure.

Sorry to hear about your little one.

Diana's groomer is correct. We used to be regulars at Terrier Dog shows in Long Beach and asked the same question after noticing that most of the Cairn and Westie contestants had hard, wiry coats (we never showed any of our terriers).

Cindy, Penny, Katy, and Emmy were never stripped, only clipped, and all have had the softer coat.

Jill we are so sorry Statler left for Rainbow Bridge and we blow soft warm kisses to Statler  xxxx,Diana and Mark are right about the coats also on the terriers and all my Cairns ahve come from small breeders but each one knew each other  in the cairn world,I only got Biba at 17 months as Cairn rescue put me in touch with the breeder and she knew of all the other breeders I had had my past cairns with so that in my case it was word of mouth which was good.. and they only bred very minimum .do let us know how you get on  and once again so sad about Statler and know how you must be feeling.
Hugs and kisses Annie Biba and Drew xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thank you!  I sooo appreciate the virtual hugs!  It's been quite the change without him - we grieved after Waldorf passed, but we still had Statler in the house so he was a distraction.  But now....... it's just so quiet and that feeling of puppy warmth is missing.  :(

So sorry you lost Statler suddenly and know that empty feeling in your heart and home when a baby passes. Exciting to hear you are preparing to welcome another little terrier into your home.
It's good you should make a list of questions. With both breeders having 30 years experience and checked out on the  AKC website it's a good start. Ask about any health issues in their line or known allergies. Most breeders will be more than happy to help with training tips, diet suggestions and grooming questions.
As for the coat question- Breed standard for a Westie or Cairn terrier is a short soft under coat with a harsher wire outer coat.
I hand strip and get a very nice outer rough wire coat as the new hair grows in. If you use a clipper or cut the hair with scissors it will be soft as it grows out.

Jill, so very sorr4y to hear of Statler's passing.  Presley was diagnosed with bladder cancer in oct and, I don't know how long I will have him.

all 3 of my westies had soft double coats, and that is what I am use to.

good luck with you new little one.

Jill we are so sorry to hear about Statler's passing to RB. It's never easy to say "goodbye" I've never shared my life with a Cairn but have had 3 Westies and all of them had a soft double coat. We've been blessed that all three had no skin issues or other allergies and that's something to ask the breeder about. As others have said, it's vital that you know of any health issues in the line and I think the temperament of both parents.is very important. We can't wait to hear what you decide and (fingers crossed!) we hope to see some pics of a new member to your family sometime in the future!
Love, Deb, Emmie, and Angel Kelsie

I'm sorry about Statler. He and Waldorf were real TC old-timers. I know you must miss them both.

I can't answer the first question but some tips on how to spot a good breeder
Ask to see the litter in person
Ask to meet the dog parents
Make sure the mother is there with the pups
Ask how often the mother is bred/when she was last bred before this
Look at where the dogs live
Google
If something feels off, don't do it or if it seems too good to be true.

Col. Potter is now rescuing Westies, Scotties, Norfolks, Norwiches, Schnauzers and other cute little dogs. You can submit an application and keep your eyes open.

Westie, Cairns, and Scotties are double coated.  If your dog is a show dog or you want the course coat the dog has to be stripped.  When you strip a double coated terrier you are stripping out the undercoat which is soft.  That allows the course upper coat to become dominant.  The stripping is begins when the dog is a puppy and must be done on a regular basis.  That is why if you pet a Westie show dog you feel that course coat.  Our standard pet Westie grooming does not include stripping.  It is a lot more complicated and time consuming.   I have been told by several friends of mine who own and groom show dogs that until the dog becomes accustomed to the stripping it is not very comfortable for them.  That is part of the reason they start the process when the dog is a pup.
