Re: Matilda's immunotherapy off to a rocky start
Matilda had to be clipped short underneath her neck and arm pit due to a 'surface' yeast infection and an ongoing bacterial infection. The vet pictured above clipped her for me and held her for me to take some photos to send to the dermatolgist the before photo was yucky. The Dermatologist said "I got the notes from your local vets and I think we are on track again. It is exceedingly likely that the yeast infection is causing most of the issues and so long as the Fluconazole does its job this should settle. However, as you have noted relapse is just around the corner and we need to break this cycle. The good news is that the yeast, being a surface infection, does not absolutely preclude use of anti-itch medications. It does however suggest that the Mediderm (which is antifungal) may be a better shampoo choice and the Episoothe SiS (hindsight makes everything a bit easier). That being the case I would 1. Continue the Baytril 150mg tablets (antibiotic) HALF a tablet once daily with a meal until finished. 2. Chlorhex 2% pink spray: to the chin, paws and vulval folds (avoid the eyes carefully) 3 times a week routinely on NON-bath days. 3. Go back to Mediderm once weekly followed by the Pyohex conditioner. 4. Restart the Apoquel ΒΌ tablet daily stopping 48 hours prior to the revisit here 28th May. 5. Continue the vaccine begins as per the schedule. 6. Continue the fluconazole 50mg once daily 7. See us back 28th May as per the schedule. If largely on track that day we can start the Barazone as planned. Cytopoint and cyclosporine remains backups as per Tians previous plan. I would be caustiously optimistic that so long as we can settle the skin inflammation and keep up the antiseptics we can break the cycle of itch and infection. We will see.

The before photo we agreed we've never seen her
look so bad. Just appeared under her neck one day out of the blue knew it wasn't there previously as I had been spraying her daily. .

Ah, bless her little heart, that has to be so uncomfortable for her! and it sounds like it came on so quickly! Sending healing prayers that you can get it under control just as quickly! I wish we had vets here that worked together on problems like this. We are in the sticks and only have a (part time--no weekends or emergency services) vet who is stretched thin and doesn't seem to be able to get help in. Love, Deb, Emmie, and Angel Kelsie

Re: Matilda's immunotherapy off to a rocky start
I feel so sad for your Matilda dealing with a yeast infection. Hopefully exposing her skin and letting it breathe with the medications it can get a handle on it and she won't repeat another outbreak cycle. My heart breaks for you Diana, I know you hoped to avoid complications as you went through with Hannah and Kelsi. Sorry to hear that this is happening to your beautiful girl. Your Vet sounds very good and hopefully Matilda will be soon healed and feeling better. Sending prayers and hugs to you both.

Re: Matilda's immunotherapy off to a rocky start
Thanks everyone, back to the vet tomorrow for another injection of her special vaccine she seems much happier and less itchier without that hair. Izzy has some bacteria and yeast so she will come to the vet tomorrow for another recheck, she is also an environmental allergy Westie she was even allergy tested but due to some unforseen? circumstances (or their stuff up more like it) she only came back with low level results to fungi and dust mite but mostly her allergies are controlled by an injection of cytopoint (usually every 8 weeks) but this time around every month while she is showing any signs of infection she has been on two lots of medication. Yes I was very disappointed and angry Sandra when I ended up with 2 allergy Westies for the 2nd time. We went to visit the pups twice and she never mentioned any testing done on the sire. The breeder knew what I had been thru yet chose not to disclose until collection day (tucked it in amongst the other paperwork) she had told us he couldn't eat chicken but never mentioned any testing that the sire of Izzy had been thru the same allergy testing and he was allergic to lots of things including grasses, trees and pollens. Izzy's Mum is Matilda's full sister so I feel some of the issues may come from her as well. Matilda reached 4 without too much in the way of allergies but then it was downhill from there. I adore these 2 but I won't be getting any more Westies once these 2 have passed. They are only 6 and 7 so am hoping we have many happy healthy years together. At the end of the week Matilda goes back to the Dermatologist against to recheck her infection.

Re: Matilda's immunotherapy off to a rocky start
Oh Diana I am so sorry to hear about Matilda's allergies. I hope she gets some relief soon from her allergy treatments. My Caesar had allergies but I was able to keep them under control. It is so disturbing that Matilda's breeder doesn't seem to take the allergy issue very seriously. Matilda is so sweet and special. Hope she feels better soon. Love Angels Caesar, Judah,& Murphy.
