Sorry, This is a correction to my first message. I'm not good at this chat room. I posted a message before editing it. I lost the message, but saw that I had typed in 3-31-06 in reference to the Iraqi war. Please note I intended to type 2003. Kay Anderson Retired Navy Seal spouse

Katie, this is a response to your 10-30-06 segment about the financial hardships and emotional struggles military wives undergo while their spouses are deployed. I want to say that the trauma and suffering does not end when the spouse returns home, discharges, or retires. My husband, a USN Seal, retired in 1992 and was eventually diagnosed with PTSD. On 3-31-06, the Iraqi war triggered his own ambush memories that led to his first Dissociative Episode, which is associated with PTSD. Basically, his brain was unable to process people, place, or time. He was like an amnesic and/or Alheizheimers person,...still walking, talking, and tying his own shoes, but not in touch with reality. He continues to have such episodes, six to date, most of which occur in the fall. No matter what measures we take to reduce the triggers: avoid watching the news or violent television shows, they keep recurring. Research tells us that the Vietnam war triggered the World War II vets and the Iraqi War triggered the Vietnam vets.... My purpose in writing is to say that: 1 The soldiers are clueless about the long-term post-war consequences. 2. Family members think that life will return to normal after their loved one comes home. 3. The government knows what lies ahead, but cannot tell because their priority is to to protect the nation. As a teacher, I see the importance of educating ourselves about the disorder so future victims can get help at the first sign of trouble. My goal is to tell our story so others will not have to learn the hard way as we did and not have to "suffer in silence." I could write a book, but am too busy being the caretaker of my husband and an adult disabled son, and teaching school. Please contact me if you desire an interview.
