    Pom had puppies - Amanda11/04/06 at 10:16Reply
My pom had puppies by c-section. She doesn't want to nurse them. We have been doing it. What can we do to get her to be a mother. She is acting like she wants to play instead of nurse.

    Westie Behavior Question - Jenny01/07/04 at 10:32Reply
We have a 6 mo Westie, Max, who has been in our family for 3 mos. He is a VERY smart and cute dog, but he is not grasping the concept that our 11-y-o daughter is also an authority figure. He constantly chews on her socks (while she's wearing them), barks and nips just as if she's another pup. We've tried the "OUCH" thing, to no avail. We have enrolled them in obedience training which will begin next week. The hope is that if my daughter is the one "holding the leash" during training, Max will begin to see her as an authority figure. I appreciate any suggestions you may have that we may try in the week before obedience training begins. Thanks in advance.

how much should he eat - JJ05/14/03 at 13:07Reply
I just got the most adorable Cairn pup, 9 weeks old. He only eats 1/2 cup of nutra nuggets/day. Is that about right? My breeder just said feed what he wants, but I can't tell if he is getting enough. Any advice on what and how much to feed this little guy?
    • how much should he eat - Tee from Hawaii 11/11/03 at 21:03Reply
We usually feed our ten week old pup dry pup food 3 times daily with a scoop of wet puppy food. She eats alot so usually we just make sure she eats a cup of food a day. If she doesn't eat it all suring the first feeding we just allow her to eat when she wants.

check your car for any chemicals which your dog might be sensitive to, such as air fresheners, paint residue, etc. Their sniffer is incredibly sensitive...they usually prefer to hang their heads out the window while riding (dangerous to the dog) or to be in the bed of a pickup. Try transporting him/her in another car to see if your car is "contaminated" by something yr dog doesn't like.
    Agression - BettyEmail12/11/02 at 06:45Reply
Does anyone have any sugesstions. We have a 2 year old Cairn Terrier that we adore. she has become extremely agressive to strangers and my childrens friends - oler ones. She has also got major food agression for human food that she finds. We do not give her human food. She also is so agressive and has bitten to protect our house and car. Amazingly enough, if we take her elsewhere she is great with everyone. We have had a trainer here many times with so success in the agression area. All other training has been wonderful. she is so smart. She will also get upset if my children are fighting and will nip at their ankles.

    NEW PUPPY - MichaelEmail06/03/02 at 09:06Reply
We currently have a 2 year old Cairn terrier. We decided recently to get a companion for him. We picked up his new sister this weekend from a local breeder. She is very happy to be around him and follows him everywhere. He is not sure what to make of her at this point and has been keeping his distance most of the time. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. It has only been two days since they've been together but I want to make sure they will be lifelong companions. Does anyone have any suggestions to get my male more interested in the puppy?

      • NEW PUPPY - carsinogen 10/30/02 at 10:38Reply
i think your puppy is just going through a pase, mine went through the same thing. just get him a bunch of chew toys, and if he nips at a person, make sure he knows that it is bad by telling him no, and just give him a light slap on the bum, it wont hurt him, but after awhile, he will figure out that it is wrong.
    • NEW PUPPY - Eileen 06/17/02 at 18:15Reply
I think it is just a matter of time, he is just sort of checking things out to see how much attention she is getting and if she is here to stay, but he will soon love her .

Hi I went through the same problem with my cairn. He is over a year now and he grew out of the habit. I used to flick his nose and tell him NO! it seems harsh but that is what I was told to do by a vet and it worked. Good luck and have fun they are a great breed.
    • cairn puppy - Eileen 01/27/02 at 15:59Reply
Yes he will, but you must start now and tell him "no" and give him a little rap on the nose, and he will get the idea. Have fun with your puppy

We have had our male Cairn puppy a month now, and he is now almost 14 weeks old. He has been nipping us (sometimes more, sometimes less) and on occasion actually gives a little bite. We are consistent with telling him no and tapping him on the nose and/or gently holding his muzzle closed. He sometimes becomes more aggressive when we do this and has snarled at us. We don't give up, but it has been frustrating. He also growled/snarled at my 11 year old daughter when she was bringing him back in the house. Will he most likely outgrow this aggressive behavior? Does anyone have any advice for us?
      • cairn puppy - Jenny 08/14/03 at 17:11Reply
Nice to know I'm not the only one with this problem. My Cairn is 3 months old and is still nipping/ biting. I have learned that tapping him on the nose only makes it worse. He thinks we're playing with him and snaps even more. He also likes to jump up and nip at our face. My husband has had a bloodly lip more than once. As if this isn't enough fun, he also will not potty train. Any suggestions out there????? We love him to death but are growing short on patience. HELP!
      • cairn puppy - Carrie TurnerEmail 08/24/03 at 08:18Reply
Isn't it frustrating? I read somewhere on the potty training to give a treat and lots of praise everytime he goes outside, and ignore any accidents unless you catch him in the act. If you do, say "No!" and take him to the appropriate place. We aren't all the way there yet, but he does seem to try and let us know, we just aren't always watching as closely as we could. As far as the nipping and biting! I have heard and read about the "alpha" dog theory, but I am told by a dog trainer that those studies were flawed, and now the best strategy is to ignore the bad and reinforce the good behavior. She said that terriers view any kind of correction as a challenge and will try to "one up you" the next time. I value anyone with more experiences oppinion! Let me know if you find something that works!
      • cairn puppy - Tee 11/11/03 at 20:58Reply
I have a 10 week old Cairn pup and she is ok when we hold and pet her, however, when we allow her to run around the house she continually bites and chews on our throw rugs. When we scold her she gets more upset and starts to nip at our ankles or toes. I hope after teething this will subside. Otherwise, she is improving on her potty training. We currently use crate training. When we are not home we put her in her crate with some toys and training pads. She peed on her pad once in the crate and when we put her in the kitchen where her food is she did her thing on the pad. There are a few mishaps now and then but she is progressing. I can relate to the feistyness though when corrected. My husband and I are looking to bring her to puppy training and see what happens there. Hopefully, it's just a puppy phase and with much care, attention, and love she will grow to be a loving obedient doggie....
      • cairn puppy - ShellEmail 11/15/03 at 19:33Reply
Your email was a trip down memory lane. We "inherited" our Cairn from my son and his wife when he was about 5 months old. They had seen him in a pet shop and bought him "on a whim" not knowing a thing about the breed. And my daughter-in-law was 7 months pregnant at the time! They found out quickly what a handful he was. We took him in before the baby was born and within 24 hours of entering our home he had peed on my sofa, unraveled a needlepoint rug and in general, wrecked havoc throughout the entire house. We could not take a STEP without him nipping at our feet and ankles. It was awful and I'm ashamed to say that I hated him those first two days...literally HATED him and I'm a real dog lover. Somewhere around the middle of day 3, that hate turned to love. I'm not quite sure how it happened but it happened. We got him into obedience class, smothered him with affection and discipline and when our kids asked for him back after our granddaughter was born, we refused and they went out and bought a golden retriever (much more appropriate). Today, our world revolves around him. He's in agility, he's training for earthdog. Yes...he runs the house--or so he thinks--but he's worth it. Cairns are a terrific breed and yes, they're a challenge but stick with it. Much of what you're experiencing will fade away with discipline, consistency and time! But I should tell you....we have to cover our trashcans. There's just something about discarded kleenex that a Cairn can't resist! Good luck.

We have had 4 Cairn Terriers and they they are just the best little dogs. Our last Cairn passed away last November of Lymphoma. My husband and I went through all the chemo and medicine. I feel so good because we added 17 months to his young life. He was only 5 years old. Just wanted to let you know that I think the Cairn Rescue is a great thing and I will never buy another Cairn from a pet shop!! Thanks!
