I'm still new to owning a Cairn, and am trying to figure out how everything works. I've searched about grooming, but most of it talks about doing it myself. I guess I'm just wondering about what I should tell the groomers, what stripping is and should I have it done to Riley (and at what point), etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! We decided to get him groomed like this because we like the look of his wiry coat. He goes about every 3 months to get it done. (He actually just got it done this past weekend which he desperately needed!) I know that you can learn to do it yourself but we found it was just easier to take him to a groomer and let her do it. It was very hard for us to find a groomer that REALLY knew how to do it but we lucked out by finding a woman that only does terrier grooming. She has about 7 westies and she does a fantastic job. You don't have to do the hand stripping unless you want Riley to have the thick and coarse coat. We personally love that look on Wick but we think all of the pups that get shaved are just as cute. It's basically personal preference. Here is the best picture that I could find of Wick after he was groomed. If it were not for that I don't know if I would do it. I have a good friend who is head of the Scottish Terrier Rescue of TN. she does her own hand stripping and offered to teach me. She shows her dogs as well. It is exspenive to have them hand stripped. Thats why most people who aren't showing or don't plan to just clip them, but once you clip it is almost impossible to go back and strip. So you need to decide if in the future if you might like to show. The same price around here, in fact, $20 - $30 and Porter had never been hand stripped his first 7 yrs. and now does just fine. His coat was very thin and doesn't grow fast. Since he is hand stripped he can shake off the wet from outdoors if it is rain or snow. Light towel dry where before he would be soaked to the skin and chilled. Actually stripping is healthier for the pet. It helps stimulate the blood supply to the hair follicles and gives a healthier skin and hair growth. It is not that difficult to supplement between strippings with your own stripping knife to groom or the 20 blade Mars King Coat. And you really don't need to shampoo them very often...they don't have body odor per se when hand stripped. I'm going to ask the groomer about stripping next time I go in. I think I'm also going to google and see if there are any terrier groomers around here that I could talk to. There is also a wonderful tool called the Mars Coat King that is fabulous. I even use that for my Westie girl. It helps bring out the coarse undercoat. If you want to see a photo of that go to the Col. Potter Mall. There is one shown there. It does a good job. That and some thinning shears can do a wonderful job on a Cairn (who is not supposed to look like a Westie--in their haircut). When we first got Charlie I didn't know any better and I took him to the groomers and when I picked him up, he was shaved/cut like a Westie. Once his coat grew out I started using the Mars Coat King on him and it seems to be working. Charlie looked just fine with the shaved look, but I like the traditional look of stripping for the Cairn.
