Luxating Patella
Hi, Has your baby or a friend's baby ever had surgery on a Luxating Patella? Angel is about to get her cast off and stitches out next Wednesday. How did you keep your baby still after this point?
I know she has still has to take it easy, but I am already pulling my hair out just thinking about it.

Re: Luxating Patella
A few here have had this surgery. You just need to ensure they take it easy. Apparently swimming's great therapy for it as well. Why's she got the bare patch on her side too, Jeanne ? Hope she's better soon. It takes a long while to be completely healed. XXX.

Re: Luxating Patella
Kelsi has luxating patellas but hasn't had surgery. The new Vet said "she will need surgery before she turns 1" and my regular Vet said probably will never need it. She's now 7 and it doesn't seem to worry her. I too wondered what the bald spot was?

Re: Luxating Patella
Diana, They said before ONE?! Angel is two. Her vet is an expert at doing this surgery and he said he had done it as old as 12. Yes it is better before two, but it can actually still be done 'til 15. And there is a score 1 - 4 that means the severity. Angel's severity went from 3 - 4 in 9 months, because of her activity level.
At a level four the knee cap is down to almost nothing. Yes, you don't have to operate but the dog will learn to compensate.

Re: Luxating Patella
While I've never had this surgery with my Westies, I have had to do 3 separate Yorkies. I never did have a problem keeping them quiet afterwards, because they favored it so much that I actually had to encourage them to walk. But if your dog is too active, I would try walking them on a leash so you can control them in the yard, etc. Best wishes.

Re: Luxating Patella
Hi Sherrie, Thanks, I am thinking that I will have to keep her on a leash to keep quiet or I will feel like I burnt the money I paid for the surgery. ;)

Re: Luxating Patella
Daisy and BeeGee both have Luxated Patellas. Seeing this I am so happy that I decided not to have the surgery. Daisy is 8 now and doing just fine with it. BeeGee is 5 and hasn't had any problems either. We hope Angel recovers well and you can figure a way to keep her quiet after she gets her cast off. xxxxBetty and the Girlies....
