Long..Gareth still has aggression issues

Update on Gareth...He is still very very aggressive when we pick him up to get him out of the car when he has been for a walk and also sometimes ...most of the time if you want to pick him up,apart from when he gets picked up to put him in the car to go for a walk. Also you can stroke him and cuddle him sometimes but then sometimes the same will give a low growl and his eyes say it all!..he would certainly go for your hand!..He certainly means to harm there is no question which makes think something bad has happened to him when picked up before,he can do this regardless of how nice you are to him and even if he has had a lovely walk etc..the worrying thing is if he got into trouble with another dog or for any reason needed picking up quickly this would be a problem,Yes he,s fine if left alone and to potter in his own way but its not good he is like this.He seems very happy and rolls on the sofa and gets along with the girls ok and plays..But does not like you to interfere when he is playing with one of them.I wonder if he is neutered will he change at all.As you all know Eric was never neutered and I could do anything with him,he would do his growls etc but they were always in play or and even if he was aggressive in rat catching etc I knew 100% I could pick him up and he would let me do anything with him ..Having said that I had him from 9 weeks old..and gareth has spent 4 years of me not knowing really what has happened to him apart from the last 2 years being shut in a room a lot.
I have to give him some chances but as we all know an untrustworthy animal can be a dangerous one to other puppers and also humans,So I need to work a lot more with him and see what happens.Has anyone had similar problems or can give any advice?..I have meant to post this for a while but always working at night now and then its very late to respond often to reply's.
Tonight we had to bath him as he rolled in fox poo and he put up a struggle even with Emmas slip rope on..then once in the bath he was not too bad and let me pick him up to get him out and he was fine being dried but you do have to watch your hands.Father used to train a lot of his security dogs with hard leather gloves on (for safety when training dogs to bring humans down by their arms..Not that thats what I want them for though!)...I wondered if I should get some and then practise picking him up lots and giving a treat when no growls!..What does anyone think about that?
Love and kisses Annie xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I do need to add he has been a good boy today and we went out all of us in the car all day for lots of long walks to differant places,we all love to do this albeit very muddy..but you know Cairns the muddier the better!!..Gareth has been loving tonight and no problems Bless him..we are working to try overcome what we think is that he has been maybe abused in some way or ignored and left as we know for long periods alone in a room during the day..I feel sure he will get better as time goes on and with Love and understanding and Thank you and welcome for your views on this..also he cuddled on the sofa with me again last night and been very happy when he is with us doing this.
Love and kisses xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Annie, I'm so sorry that Gareth has this very serious problem. Neutering MIGHT help - less testosterone - and they have medicine for aggressiveness. I would talk to my vet. First you have those evil neighbors, and then a sometimes aggressive pup.
Talk to your vet and please, keep us informed.

Love,

Marie

Annie, thanks for putting this post here, I think it might be helpful for others and on the general it was scrolling off so fast.

I haven't had time to draft a reply about Casey, but will try tomorrow evening. The weather has been incredable for this time of year and I am trying to make the most of with lots of wlaks to the bush, sometimes cutting wood or just being out there, Casey loves it so much and so do I.

talk soo, Theo and Casey xox

Annie - has he gotten better since you got him? If he has, it's possible with even more time and trust, he could overcome it completely. But I firmly believe getting him neutered will help a lot. It would be healthier for him overall - physically as well as mentally. The hormones in him could be contributing to the situation. I know some people just don't believe in neutering, but for your safety (and others'), this is a situation where it could really help. Otherwise, I would suggest going online and researching different trainers/behaviorists to see what they have to say.

Sue ,Yes he has got better since we got him and we talk to him a lot,Peter also thinks we need to neuter him anyway..certainly more problems if we meet other un neutered dogs also.I remember how Eric would be very very aggressive to those..but at least I knew I could handle Eric and get him off the other dogs without him going for me.He is very highly charged..strung up if you see what I mean..a bit like a stallion full of go!!..then he loves sometimes at night to relax..as I type this now its Ellie thats such a naughty noisy girl ...zooming all over the garden in the dark and Yap yap Yap at the planes lights in the skies!!..Little Monkey..she needs rural space! Or maybe she wants to Zoom in Space!!LOL,Thank you for your advice and will keep updating xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Annie- I'm sorry you are still having issues with Gareth. I know how worriesome it is- you worry about Gareth, yourselves and the other puppers...we have the same problems with Jasper. it has gotten better over the last year with him. He has been neutered and it has helps. Also, we have learned that picking him up from behind is acceptable, whereas, picking him up from the front or side is not- it is the feeling of someone coming over his head! We have learned not to comeover the top of him and generally this seems to have soved many issues. I can actually do anything to him...but everyone else has to be careful. Kaitlyn has been bit when bending down to kiss him and Ken got bit when bending over to pick him up- both when he was in a very good mood. If approached from behind, no problems...This si a simplified answer, but maybe gives you some insight into something else to look at...we are still finding his "triggers" even after 12 months, but we are getting better at sensing his hot buttons and the neutering definitely helps. Good luck, Annie.Oh, Ken also said to tell you we tell Jasper very quietly in a soothing voice what we are going to do before we do it when he is riled up. This seems to help. He seems to know what we are saying and understand.Sounds silly I know, but...Try talking to him...

Thanks Kim,I pick him up from the side..when I get him out of the car he is on the back seat at waist height and he seems to prefer picking up from the side not rear,This morning I stroked him by the door and the door shut slightly with the breeze onto his rump and he even growled at the door!..he does not growl when you pick him up to put him in the car for a walk!..But Peter sort of walked him to the hose pipe yesterday to rinse his muddy legs and he growls but then Peter just spoke softly but firmly and said Come on Gareth it wont harm you and then he just stood whilst being hosed with out being held..then he follows Peter around alnight and cuddled and played on the floor rubbing his tummy and he likes his back rubbed whilst he is rolling on the floor..Gareth this is not Peter!!LOL..will keep you updated and also as put on Sues post thinking of neutering anyway but will discuss with vet.Thank you for your advice and reply.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

ALSO -

He may have some pain in his back - it is not uncommon for Cairns, esp. those who are a little longer, to have disc problems, spinal arthritis and these conditions are painful when being picked up, or sometimes during a sudden movement.

It may not be just a behavioural issue. This was the case with Argyle, and he acted very much as you describe. The difference being that since he was adopted after a very traumatic incident, I knew from the beginning that the likelihood of back pain was high.

Just something to consider.
