hip rear end problems in westies Vote for this post

Does any one have experience with hip issues ...i.e. difficulty moving, doing steps? In addition problems with irritation in the anal areas? My little Westie Emmi has been tried on Derramax, which helped but caused gastrointestinal problems.
She has such a sensitive tummy,is on Hills ID formula dog food... and strictly controlled treats. She does better with pepcid 2x a day as well.Has seriously terrible breath at times tho,not the teeth either. The anal problem is like an oozing and inflamation even tho her glands are not full. I just want her to feel good.
She is 11 yrs now, and any tips would be appreciated !

The anal glands probably just need to be expressed -- my groomer or the vet will do that for you unless you know how.

second - the hip issues might be able to be alleviated by chiropractic if you have a vet chiropractor in your area.  The Derramax I am assuming is a pain killer for arthritis?  That is probably irritating her stomach.  The bad breath could be coming from the dried dog food.

Has your pup had any vaccinations recently?

Couple of ideas

1.  your pup may do better on a raw diet (for what reason is your pup on hills)
2.  homeopathic treatment may alleviate her pain without putting her on pain med that may affect kidneys or liver

I am a true believer in less medicine and more natural route.  Both my pups and me are under homeopathic treatment - it can work wonders.  I stopped all vaccinations and flea control.  I feed my dogs a raw diet.

Hope this helps

Cheryl

We have four westies, one with tummy issues & food allergies and two with just food allergies. We feed Wellness Simple rice & salmon and have had really good results with it. We control treats as well, they cannot tolerate wheat, corn, barley or quinoa. You may want to slowly switch her over & see if she does better.  We had an older dog on the ID and if I remember correctly it had some corn in it, so it may be bothering her.
