Avon Terrier up for adoption - 3 y.o. - Catherine 04/07/08 at 13:52 I found out that my little dog (petite for Avon Terrier 11 lbs) gives me allergies. She is definitely all the descriptions that Avon Terriers are. I am looking at placing Cloe in a family home who is looking for a second Avon terrier... Let me know.

Coming when called - CJ Hommel 06/24/07 at 00:14 My 18 mo old bichon-poo will not come when I call her when we are outdoors. She comes for me inside the house, but outside she just dances all around me, like "catch me if you can". It takes me 3 or 4 minutes of chasing and then I catch her by luck. Any suggestions? Thanks
Running with Avons - ElizabethL06/14/07 at 00:51 We adopted two Avons, love 'em!Our male will bolt any chance he gets. I've been taking them for a run each day while I bike to get out some of their energy. They just love it. I only go 3-4 blocks, early morning or evening, but my neighbor was worried that I would cause them to overheat. Any thoughts?

Should I get an Avon Terrior - Tara 04/03/07 at 17:33 My husband and I are on a waiting list for an Avon Terrier. Are they overall good dogs? Any biting problems or anything else I should be concerned or aware of? Thanks for all of your help!

12/23/07 at 21:11 I have 2 avon's myself from Willow Hills Kernnel, both were sired by Zeus, so they are 1/2 sisters. I love them to death, so cute and cuddly.

On a waiting list? Seriously? The last time I was up in Avon, there were plenty of puppies. Anyway, both of mine are just great little dogs. They will chase squirrels out of the yard, but come right back. Otherwise, they take care of their business and immediately return. They are terriers, and don't take any crap from strange dogs, but are not aggressive toward people at all.

04/15/07 at 19:54 We have Zazu who will be 3 in June. She is a great dog. She play nips when we play and when we come home or wake up she HAS to lick us! It is sorta annoying but then it is her way of saying "Hi". We dont let her off leash as she would bolt. Though she is really good at going to the car and then going to the gate and sitting and waiting. We call her cat dog as she has qualities of both. You wont be disappointed they are great pets. We just gave her a modified schnauser cut and now we can see her licorice eyes. Cute!!
- Should I get an Avon Terrior - Lynn Lehrman
04/14/07 at 09:24 Maggie does nip at times. It's mostly when a younger person moves towards her too quickly (she is not aggressive, just nervous mostly with kids who tend to move quickly). I wouldn't trade her for the world; she's extremely affectionate!

04/04/07 at 09:43 Hi Tara: I have two Avon's and they are wonderful members of my family. My oldest does have an annoying habit of barking when out. He's just a loud mouth! Haven't really figured out a good way to curb that other than being consistent in scolding. My youngest does nip but its playbiting. Neither dog has ever bit out of aggression. He's slowly getting it and he's just over a year old. These dogs do need to be in a securly fenced yard. With the exception of the highly unusual dog, they are not meant to be off leash. If you need more detailed info. Email me.

Wood Ticks - Judy 04/01/07 at 23:08 Yes here it is April 1st and my one Avon had a wood tick already. The real problem is he can't use Frontline. He always has a seizure the day after only time he has this problem. Any ideas on how to solve this problem. His partner can use it no problem.
Biting/Nipping - Jan 03/23/07 at 23:21 Our "high energy" Avon nips when greeting; our "low energy" Avon does not do this. Anyone have success in correcting this behavior?

- Biting/Nipping - Laura
04/02/07 at 17:54 I have the same problem with my youngest, Bernie, who turned a year in February. Is he nipping you and your family or visitors to the house? I have read that it is valuable to have visitors to your house have a high value treat that they have your pup sit for when they come over. If it is you he is nipping then maybe just the usual things like fitting your whole fist in his mouth and telling him no bite. I sometimes wonder if Bernie will ever get it! No bite and holding his mouth shut hasn't done a thing.
Boarding kennel - Laura 12/24/06 at 13:42 Anybody have a recommendation of a boarding kennel south of the metro. I would like to know of a good one just in case I need one in the future.
tv - Simonsee 11/12/06 at 14:11 hi Molly parents say that tv is bad for you and blah blah blah but is it true but then they say when your not doing anything at 6pm why don't u watch the news. it's juat silly from Simonsee
Congratulations - Laura Baer 08/29/06 at 10:14 Congrats to all of you who have managed to convince your significant other to get a second dog. I am campaigning for that as I write but have some convincing yet to do!
- Congratulations - Joan 08/29/06 at 23:05
Tell hubby that having two Avons is better. the girls play with each other. I have the mom and daughter and if the young one gets out of line mom scolds her. The older one hasn't had a single accident in the house. Consider getting an older dog instead of another puppy. Good luck
- Congratulations - Laura
10/03/06 at 13:29 FYI Everyone! I got my second Avon. He's 8 months old. He is wheaten colored with a dark muzzle and his name is Bernie. Jeter and him have a blast in our backyard. I guess I bugged my husband Joe just one day too many!
- Congratulations - Luann
11/08/06 at 23:15 How's it going with having the second Avon? My Avon is 14 months old and I have been thinking about getting another, but need more convincing. Please send me an update on how your 2 are getting along--thanks!
- Congratulations - Laura
11/28/06 at 12:52 I replied personally to Luann but thought for anyone else contemplating adding a sibling for their Avon I would add my two cents. DO IT! I love having two and wouldn't have it any other way. They love having each other.
Willow Hill website - Laura 08/28/06 at 09:24 I forgot to mention in my previous post that there are photos of some retirees available for adoption from Willow Hill on her newly updated website. There are a couple of photos from people who did adopt retirees and it sounds as if they adapt well to their new homes!!!!!!
See avonterrier.com/happy_owners.html - Laura 08/28/06 at 09:11 For any of you folks who got their dog from Willow Hill, Andrea has updated her website and has added photos of dogs under "happy owners". My dog Jeter is pictured there as well as some other wonderful dogs! They're so darn cute.
My Avon - Jenni 08/13/06 at 00:50 We bought an Avon in June and am I ever thankful for that! She's been quite entertaining and loves to run- not always a good thing. She is a brindle and we named her Uma and it definetly fits because she's one big toughy and full of energy. I'm in the Rochester area, anyone have an Avon in the area?
- My Avon - Joan
08/26/06 at 15:40 I just came home with two avon dogs last night. We had a quiet night. They slept in seperate crates all night. So far only 1 accident. We went for a long walk earlier and now they are sleeping in the sunshine. I have Tinker, a 6 yr old and her 4 mo old daughter. What a wonderful pair. I am in northern MN.
- My Avon - MarkR 08/22/06 at 03:30
The only thing better than owning an Avon is owning two. We got our 2½ year old Annie her very own pup. Betty is now just a little over 6 months old, and they love playing together
hair growth - julie 07/19/06 at 14:06 I took my cairn terrier to a groomer and was horrified when I picked him up he had been nearly scalped most of his coat has gone. How long will the coat take to grow? And will the original texture return.
- hair growth - MarkR 08/04/06 at 02:31
The original texture may not return if he was clipped instead of stripped. It's not hard to learn how to strip a terrier, and it's the best way to keep their coat robust.
- hair growth - Laura
07/26/06 at 16:24 I am not sure how long it will take. Did she clipper him or strip him or what? I got my dog clippered about a little less than three months ago and he is almost fully grown out like he was when I brought him in. I loved the job she did on him though. He looked like he had been stripped but she did it with a clipper. He just looked so darn cute. I would think that your cairn would grow back in like he was in a couple to three months.
Aligmagnet - Laura 06/26/06 at 11:10 Do any of you guys south of the metro take your dogs to Aligmagnet?
- Aligmagnet - Catherine
07/15/06 at 19:18 Yes, the more the merrier!
- Alimagnet - Karen
06/26/06 at 17:46 Yes! My Avon, Hubble, and I meet Cloe and Cloe's owner there all the time in the small dog area. We usually meet in the early evenings or after dinner. It's great; the dogs love to run and play together.
Anyone have an Avon in other States? - Karen 05/19/06 at 21:12 Hello again -- I now live in Montana with my wonderful Avon, Brillo. I used to live south of Prior Lake, and so did frequently see Avon Terriers .... but of course, haven't seen any at all here. I was wondering if anyone on this board lives out of Minnesota?
Grooming or stripping - Laura Baer 04/28/06 at 09:46 Am considering having my pup groomed or stripped in Apple Valley, Burnsville area. Any suggestions on where to take him and if any groomers out here do the handstripping?
- Grooming or stripping - patti 11/20/08 at 18:08
I too am looking for a groomer in the same area for my Cairn terrier--would like him hand stripped. Any recommendations would be appreciated!
Avon Terrier - Dave S 04/23/06 at 11:27 We have had a Westie and two Cairns - we are looking for another terrier, preferably a fairly young adult - I hear conflicting statements about Avon breeders- the only source for Avons' I have heard of is Willow Hill Kennels, are there others? Suggestions? Thanks, Dave S

05/03/06 at 15:26 http://www.westwindkennel.com/ is the other breeder who is actually the sister (or half sister?) to the breeder at Willow Hill Kennels

04/28/06 at 09:44 Hi Dave. I have an male Avon who is 8 months. I love the little guy and would get another. His mother is full cairn and his dad is an avon. I got him from Willow Hill. I am thinking of adding a sibling but want to get him fully trained first!
Health Guarantee Question - Angie 04/17/06 at 19:25 Good evening everyone, I purchased an 8 week old Cocker Spaniel last week, and had to admit him to the hospital this week because he could not urinate. Does anyone know if the Breeder is responsible for the Vet bills???
- Health Guarantee Question - Laura
04/20/06 at 14:12 My breeder gave me a one year health guarantee. Did you get something like this in writing? Has the vet determined the cause of your pup's problem?
Grooming - Judy 03/19/06 at 21:32 My one Avon looks like A Carian Terrier. Has wire hair I read somewhere that you shouldn't cut the hair on a wire hair Carian Terrier that it won't grow back. Has anyone given this type a haircut?
- Grooming - Darie
04/13/06 at 14:06 I have my Avon groomed every couple of months. He loves it and the wire hair continues to grow. If it is trimmed too close he will tend to shed a little more. I try to keep it around 1 1/2". Kind of do a Westie face cut and he is cuter than a button.
- Grooming - Theresa
03/20/06 at 19:57 I was also wondering about giving haircuts. Maggie is shedding hair all over, she is an Avon terrior and someone said you should not give haicuts to them. Is there any truth to that?
- Grooming - Judy
03/20/06 at 22:10 My other Avon terrier has the black and white softer hair. She gets hair cuts a lot. Really looks cute. I have her cut kind of like a Westie. She's black and white stipped when she has short hair.
- Grooming - Ali 04/02/06 at 11:59
I have a Cairn Terrier and we first tried grooming her by "stripping" the hair as we were told to do by groomers because that would give her the Cainr Terrier look. We found out she didn't like that so we went to buzzing her for the summer which she enjoyed and her hair grew back just in time for winter. It's longer and fuller then ever. I wouldn't have any worries about the hair growing back.
Digging - Laura Baer 03/18/06 at 12:19 Any ideas on how to discourage digging. Our little angel likes to dig and go under the decking that is attached to our lower level. He is gone under there and comes back with dirty little feet that when mixed with the snow makes for an awful mess!!!!!
Avon Food - Theresa Luskey 01/26/06 at 19:58 What kind of dog food is everyone feeding there Avons. I am doing puppy chow right now but I am having some issues. Maggie will be 7 months on Sat. and her weight is 12lbs. Thank you
- Avon Food - Catherine 04/24/06 at 16:17
I've got my female Avon on Flint River Farm which is 4 stars/human grade. You order it online and it comes directly from the kitchen to your door.
- Avon Food - Laura Baer
03/18/06 at 12:15 I feed Jeter purina puppy chow per our breeder but he loves fresh fruit and veggies for snacks. We call him berry boy. Loves blackberries, rasberries, clementines. He is a bit extraordinary.
- Avon Food - Barb 02/19/06 at 11:24
I feed my Avon (15 months) lamb and rice (Sprout Ultra). 1/2 cup in morning and 1/2 cup at night. She eats about 3/4 of a cup a day. Plus she is going to obedience classes so she gets training treats.
- Avon Food - Judy
01/26/06 at 21:57 I feed my two Avons Eukaneba. When our vet seen ours were getting over weight she said to put them on adult dog food. I think it was about the same age as yours. My poor babies don't have a chance I have a husband that gives them treats and table scrapes all of the time.

babysit - Julia 12/09/05 at 10:18 Does anyone need pet care over the holidays? I live in minneapolis and we have 1 1/2 year old ZaZu. I ve been thinking it would be fun to see how 2 avons are together and we could help someone out. Heck if anyone needs a back up plan we would consider dog sitting. Email if this is of any interest.
Indoor area for Avon to play in - Barb12/05/05 at 10:11 Does anyone know of an indoor play area I can take my Avon to in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area? With this cold weather I can't walk her as much as I want to.
- Indoor area for Avon to play in - ladonna benes
12/11/07 at 10:25 Urbanimal, Grand Ave. in St. Paul, and their is a location in St. Paul on Myrtle Ave. Dog Days. They are the best...big huge play area, inside and outside for potty etc.
Nipping, love bites - Laura 11/27/05 at 09:47 My puppy nips and bites the heck out of me when he sees me first thing in the morning. I try to divert his attention with chewy toys, loud noises whatever but he continues to go after me. Any suggestions? I know they are love bites but LOVE HURTS!!!!!!!
